    Getting back to Human Factors training, my professor (Psychology of Perception) once asked us to monitor a light in a dark room, he asked us to keep track of which way the light was moving, and at the end of the exercise asked us to describe which way the light was moving. After getting input and developing a consensus from the class on which way the light moved, he confessed that the small light had never actually moved, and that our eyes move in the dark and without a point of reference, the light appears to move in the opposite direction. The important lesson from this exercise is to learn that no matter how sharp our eyesight and other senses are, we cannot always trust what we are perceiving because our brain has to interpret all the signals from our eyes and ears before we can even try to interpret what these signals are telling us...

    It's difficult to reboot your mind after encountering IMC induced spatial disorientation. Your brain is trying to sort through the reasons for sloppy reactive flying, and to fix what is now behind your airplane instead of moving ahead to the next task, which is why I think you fixated on other items like navigation and lost track of your altitude on 3 occasions. I love videos with mistakes because these are the best lessons. I studied human factors at UCLA as part of my Psychology degree, which has been really helpful in understanding airborne spatial disorientation. It's useful to stay calm and understand that everyone is prone to disorientation during certain conditions and circumstances, and my favorite strategy is to pretend you're in a simulator and playing a videogame so that you force yourself to ignore inner ear and other biological cues that disagree with your instruments and rely strictly on the visual cues on the screens and gauges in front of you. I wonder if autopilot manufacturers could install a button for spatial disorientation episodes that would automatically level the airplane automatically so pilots could catch up with certain tasks before proceeding to the next phase of flight (cruise, descent, arrival, approach, landing, etc.). I once witnessed a friend who became so disoriented after entering the clouds that he forgot his crew resource management lessons. He was sitting right next to someone who was a qualified pilot who was Not disoriented. As we approached our assigned heading, I could see he was going to overshoot it, so I mentioned our assigned heading, and then started tapping on the heading indicator, finally reminding him of our assigned heading again as he blew right past it. Eventually he confessed he had no memory of my directions or input as he was working through aviating, navigating and communicating while disoriented. This episode shows how task saturated our brains can become under these conditions, and how important teamwork and CRM is in the cockpit. Knowing the terrain involved in these approaches to Oxnard and Camarillo, altitude is the priority and navigating is secondary. Excellent work and great video...

    If it can't be legally used for instrument approaches, that's a deal killer for me. But I must admit, I've never used my Century IIIB for practice instrument approaches, or IPCs... In fact, in my first solid IFR flight many, many years ago, I forgot I even had an autopilot, I was so nervous not to screw up. It's stuck with me ever since, I guess....

    god bless your family and your lovely kids, please i really want to know, if i have a long flight lets say 7 hours flight on an airplane from new york to london how much oxygen inside the airplane at 35000 to 40000 feet at high altitude will i have the same symptoms that you guys had before using oxygen device?? And what is the difference when it comes to feeling symptoms in your own plane and the commercial airplane?

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey 22 дня назад

      Those airplanes have pressurized cabins. Which means the air inside the cabin is like the air around 8000’ I believe (it may be 6000’). If the cabin were to have a loss of pressure you would only have a couple minutes to put on the oxygen mask before you’d pass out.

And for a Glide 3°, descend , you must loose 300' x 1 NM, and for that Is G/Speed , d ivide by 2 example 140/2=70, so you add a 0 that Is 700/minute, of descend, well shortly I Will have Manual where I talk about that, and more. You could fly over the grapevine into the Santa Clarita Valley and then descend to 5500 and pick up the coastal route over LAX- it's published with the LA area TAC. Its a simple procedure and you talk to SoCal during it. after LAX they would give you a descent and hand you off to Long Beach. def talk to your CFI and look at that charted procedure.

    Hi. I have a dog about the size of your dog Maltese Shih Tzu measuring 13" around head under chin over ears. I don't know if the small size is best in the 4 paws aviation ear muffs or the medium. 13" is Max measurement for small and minimum measurement for medium. What size did you get and was your dogs measurement similar/ less or more? Can you tell me the dimensions of the out shell and inner space for the ear? I emailed the company but as yet I haven't heard anything yet. I'd like to get them asap. Thank so much if you can help.
